The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is funded by the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care. Its work in low and middle income countries is principally funded through UK Aid from the UK government. The NIHR Global Health Research Portfolio uses UK Aid to fund high quality applied health research and training to meet the needs of the people in low and middle income countries (LMICs).
The NIHR GHR SPARC scheme supports NIHR GHR Academy members to undertake a short placement elsewhere in the NIHR. The scheme is open to all health, public health and social care research and methodology professions.
The placement should optimise and enhance your research training experience as well as your networks, CVs and career opportunities. For example, you could learn a new skill/technique or collaborate with researchers/specialists.
The scheme enables NIHR GHR researchers to collaborate with other parts of the NIHR GHR portfolio and wider UK NIHR Infrastructure (non-ODA funded). The scheme aims to enhance the NIHR GHR Programmes outcomes in achieving direct and primary benefit for patients and populations in LMICs.
Eligibility:
The NIHR GHR SPARC is open to all NIHR GHR Academy Members in NIHR GHR Programmes with an overarching contract end date after 31st December 2024. The NIHR GHR SPARC is funded by Official Development Assistance (ODA) and as such, an individual applying for this award must be able to demonstrate how the award will directly and primarily benefit patients and the public in countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) List of ODA Recipients (OECD DAC list (.PDF)).
Level of funding: Each award consists of a package of up to £10,000 to support a bespoke placement. This may include:
- funding for travel
- accommodation and subsistence costs
- funding for short training courses
- funding for any relevant placement outputs.
Additional information: There is no minimum or maximum duration for the placement/taster opportunity. Placements can range from 2 weeks to 6 months. The placement period can also be broken up.
